Biografia Gregory Issacs

Gregory Isaacs

Gregory Isaacs nasceu dia 15 de Julho de 1951, no bairro de Fletcher’s Land, em Kingston. Desde menino trabalhou duro, acumulando uma extensa lista de profissões que incluiu temporadas como marceneiro, tratador de cavalos, eletricista e pintor de painéis e cenários teatrais. Segundo seus velhos amigos, ele foi o primeiro a ter um carro e a montar uma loja de discos entre os jovens da vizinhança. Vizinhança que também abrigava algumas estrelas de primeira grandeza do showbizz jamaicano, como o ’Mr. Rock Steady’ Ken Boothe, o trio The Melodians e o melodioso Slim Smith. O jovem Gregory freqüentava os ensaios de todos eles e ainda ouvia atentamente às vozes de Sam Cooke e Brook Benton que chegavam pelo rádio. Foi a partir dessas influências que ele forjou seu estilo único, mixando a malemolência jamaicana com o vocal inspirado da soul music.No início dos anos 70 ele iniciou sua vitoriosa carreira solo trabalhando com um dos manda-chuvas do vinil na Jamaica, Alvin Ranglin. Mas sua busca por independência o levou a fundar um selo próprio de gravação, o African Museum, também o nome da sua loja e quartel-general. Isso não o impediu de gravar com outros outsiders da cena musical, como Lee Perry e Sly & Robbie. Com eles Gregory lsaacs realizou algumas das obras-primas que consolidaram sua identificação com o público (leia mais sobre a discografia de Gregory na página Do RootsGregory ao TecnoGregory).Sua enorme popularidade na pátria do reggae só se compara à que alcançou em terras brasileiras, mais precisamente no Maranhão (1), onde se apresentou ao lado da banda Tribo de JAH em 91. O complicado arranjo do jogo amoroso é certamente o tema mais explorado por Gregory, destacando-se a vasta porção dedicada aos dissabores e pequenas alegrias da solidão. Mas a realidade jamaicana e a força da mensagem rasta também têm seu lugar em canções como "The Border", "Mr. Cop" e "Opel Ride". A crueza da vida nas ruas também não é estranha a Gregory lsaacs: "Quando se vive sob certas condições, tudo pode acontecer a você", conforma-se. Assumindo seu lado Bezerra da Silva, ele confirma que já fez meia centena de ’passeios de Opel’, marca dos carros de polícia na ilha: "Quase sempre por dirigir sem licença ou posse de ervas ilegais", esclarece. Nessa hora uma pequena multa resolve o problema, mas nos casos de porte de arma a coisa é mais séria. As rígidas leis jamaicanas sobre armas de fogo já o botaram no xadrez por alguns meses. Mas Gregory se defende: "Quando te acusam uma vez por porte de arma e você é culpado, é fácil para eles acusarem você outra vez e mais outra por isso e mesmo sendo inocente ninguém acredita. (... ) Não lido com o crime". Gregory conta ainda que os policiais costumam provocá-lo e às vezes tentam extorquir alguma grana. Na prisão ele conviveu com todo o tipo de gente, estudou bastante e passou em revista a sua vida. Acabou por transformar essa experiência em novos clássicos do reggae, como "Days of Penitentiary", "Condemned" e muitos outros. Os problemas com a polícia e o envolvimento com drogas mais pesadas nos anos 80 deram margem a todo tipo de boato. Gregory conheceu então o pior lado da popularidade: "As pessoas em geral adoram falar mal de quem não conhecem e não conseguem entender. Elas sempre acreditam no mal que lhes contam e duvidam do bem. (...) Quanto às drogas, são as armas mais devastadoras. Foram o maior erro que cometi". Este bem de que alguns duvidam está, por exemplo, na forma como Gregory ajuda sua comunidade. Os moradores do gueto o procuram a toda hora com diversos pedidos: "Grande parte do que ganho com meu trabalho serve para ajudar a todas essas pessoas que precisam de assistência. (... ) Por isso a maior alegria para mim é a festa anual que fazemos no Orfanato de Maxfield no dia 7 de janeiro. Meus garotos e outras crianças da comunidade juntam cadernos, pincéis e materiais e doam para eles. Já doei um carro e várias cadeiras de rodas. (... ) Se estou vivo até hoje é porque procuro fazer o que é certo". Gregory também cumpre sua obrigação de amparar os filhos que teve com várias mulheres. Sua sintonia com o homem jamaicano é total: "Eu represento o povo. Fazer o povo feliz é me fazer feliz", conclui. O homem das mil faces que se recusa enquadrado pela sociedade parece ter amadurecido. Continua a trabalhar febrilmente, mas sem cair nas armadilhas que muitas vezes seu estilo de vida lhe pôs pelo caminho. Seja o Gregory sedutor ou o solitário, seja o solidário ou o malandro, seja o formiga ou o cigarra, será sempre lembrado como um dos grandes responsáveis pela excelência da musical arte jamaicana.
